Thanksgiving Potluck November 15, 2007

Posted by daniel in : Uncategorized , 2 comments

REMINDER: This Thursday from 4-6pm the GSC and the Office of the Chaplains are hosting a Thanksgiving Pre-Potluck in McAlister Center (actually, it’s supposed to be a Pre-Thanksgiving Potluck, but we made a typo and didn’t notice it until all the flyers had been posted up). We will provide the turkey, the mashed potatoes, the stuffing, and can’t wait to try whatever you choose to bring.

Everyone who wants to come should RSVP to gscthanksgiving@gmail.com . It’s not too late to RSVP… actually, it is, but just say you’re being fashionably late. Deadlines are for chumps anyways.

The EDGE IS Research Seminar Series

Action Design, a Fresh Approach to IS Research

Matti Rossi

Friday, October 12, 2007, 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm, ACB 211
Over the past years, two issues have consistently dominated the IS research discourse in Information Systems (IS). The first issue is the relevance of IS research.  Specifically, it is contended that IS research is not relevant to practice, leading to disconnect between academics and practitioners.  The second issue is the definition of the core of the discipline.  The diverse positions taken here amongst academics leads to a separation of research approaches and values between behavioral and technology-oriented researchers.  One conclusion that can be made from this is that IS research is failing in its duty to influence practice by not aligning its core concerns with those faced in practice.  Clearly, we need to reflect on this vital aspect of our academic work and search for innovative solutions to be relevant while at the same time not lose the rigor that is essential for sound academic research.

Our approach is based on the recognition IS research has a dual mission, namely to (a) add to existing theory, and (b) to produce knowledge to support IS practitioners in solving current and anticipated problems. We subscribe to the notion that the core IS mission is developing IT artifacts.  We can achieve this by taking a proactive stance in research which is characterized by being prescriptive or constructive, aimed at improving practice, solving problems and which has a utilitarian perspective. Two research approaches that have these characteristics are Design Research (DR) and Action Research (AR).  The specific question we seek to answer is:  How can IS researchers combine AR and DR to develop knowledge about building innovative IT-artifacts for problem-solving in authentic environments?  To answer this question, we propose an innovative research approach called Action Design (AD) that builds knowledge by (a) intervening in an organization (b) through developing an artifact. We claim that Action Design is a new approach to IS research that tries to combine DR and AR into a holistic programme for studying impacts of using new artefacts to solve organizational problems.

Matti Rossi is a professor of information systems at Helsinki School of Economics. He is currently on sabbatical at Claremont Graduate University. He has worked as research fellow at Erasmus University Rotterdam and as a visiting assistant professor at Georgia State University, Atlanta. He received his Ph.D. degree in Business Administration from the University of Jyväskylä in 1998. He has been the principal investigator in several major research projects funded by the technological development center of Finland and Academy of Finland.

His research papers have appeared in journals such as CACM, Journal of AIS, Information and Management and Information Systems, and over thirty of them have appeared in conferences such as ICIS, HICSS and CAiSE.

Brown Bag Presentation

Dynamic Generation of a Health Topics Overview from Consumer Health Information Documents

Date: Thursday, October 4th

Time: 12:00pm

Location: SISAT Conference Room (Room 213)

Presentation by: Trudi Miller

School of Information Systems & Technology, Claremont Graduate University

Abstract — Interest in online health information is increasing, but many web pages are too difficult for consumers to understand.  Consumers need assistance to comprehend and understand health web sites.  We created a system that dynamically generates a health topics overview for consumer health web pages that organizes the information into four consumer-preferred categories: Body Parts, Diseases and Injuries, Drugs and Chemicals, and Medical Procedures, while also displaying visualization prevalence of individual topics.  The system combines the Open-Access Consumer Health Vocabulary and the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) with customized natural language processing.  We evaluated our system’s ability to extract and categorize the health information by calculating precision, recall, and F-score for phrase extraction and categorization.  We tested 27 pages, 31,485 words, from three different consumer web sites.  Overall, precision is 82%, recall is 75%, and F-score is 78%.  Precision did not significantly differ for the three sources of web pages.

I’m going to be making a research presentation in Canada next month, and will be discussing my dissertation!  Please come and ask me tough questions!

Sincerely,
Trudi Miller
